about

Return of the Dead Surfer was recorded by the Vinyl Skyway in 2011. After a three year hiatus, Michael Hayes and Andy Santospago rejoined to put together another great record. Easily two volumes of songs that also feature pianist Dave Lieb, bassist Marc Hickox, and drummer Andy Plaisted, all full-time veteran musicians whose contributions help make Return of the Dead Surfer one of this year's most dynamic releases. The bulk of this record was recorded to 2 inch analog tape at Kissy Pig in Allston, and many additional friends contributed fantastic music contributions. In today's music model, fans are given the power of choice and artists the freedom to set their own course. Had it not been for fans who donated $6,000, the Vinyl Skyway may never have come out with Dead Surfer. Like their first two albums, it is the essence of a classic LP, with well-crafted pop songs that weave together, bound by sublime melodies and gorgeous harmonies; a brilliant hybrid of Americana, Brit-pop, and rock n roll. The group thanks all who helped make this record possible.

Track Name: Salvo
You kicked the habit
but you didn't want your friends to know
and all that shit that we split
well it's working for you now
every time that you see
a blind face in the rear view mirror
it's my lines that you stole
and covered up
kiss me love
now it's goodbye
i'll make you moan
make you cry
miss me while I go to hell
it's my creation
my own cell
And all around
the kids don't hear a sound
and the songs I play go underground
I drive through town
with all the windows down
cuz I'm the runner up today
I'm writing songs
singin' up this latest salvo
i wrote just for you
cold hearted plans
a freak without a mantra
written lists you rendered
salvo- wrote it just for you
salvo- wrote it just for you
salvo- wrote it just for you
Track Name: Charlotte
She came along with a sling on her arm
She was rich, she was true
and charmed by you
Born and raised by wolves with a fire
daddy's guns, momma's gin
and cold barbed wire
they kept you cold at night
then you closed your eyes
Charlotte, the tears that you've known
(the autumn rain reminds you)
My, my - ten years. You've grown
(a pain that always finds you here)
Even if you had to quit you wouldn't
leave it go
all the money they could give
it wouldn't get you home
She left home with a tear in her eye
On a train in the rain
you waved goodbye
Charlotte, the tears that you've known
(autumn rain reminds you)
My, my. Ten years, you've grown.
The pain that always finds you
Charlotte...
Track Name: Misty Morning Fog
In the misty morning fog we caught a ship out to sea
you were fetching, barely waking
calling out to me
In the captain's quarters you found
all the change from your life
all in a cup, washed up and waiting
for you tonight
and you know how this game goes
I've been lost and out to sea
While my golden melodies escape me now i fear
I've found you were good for me
ooohhh ooohhh ooohhh
ooohhh ooohhh aaaah
aaaah aaaah aaaah
but you know i would wait
for a decade
behind the cold bars of this prison
for those golden memories
are few and far between
and you caused nearly have of my life
you did, you did
you cost nearly half of our lives
Aahhh, Oooooh
West she goes, it's in her eyes
When she dreams I'll be asleep
where'd she go?
To Californ, it's in her lies
when she leaves I'll be asleep
west she's gone
Go on baby, hold your head and cry
It's time to pack the lorry up again
Something we both knew was bound to die
So fill up your wine glass
drink it up slowly
cry all night in your armchair
til the dawn
West she goes
it's in her eyes
When she leaves I'll be asleep
there she goes
and alcohol, it's in her arms
she will cradle it, and baby,
west she'll go
Track Name: Do You Remember
I found your clear blue sky
in a cloud hanging down on me
playing moonlight mile
through a pile of misery
When we were younger girl
you sang a song for me
it was a masterpiece
do you remember?
Ooohh....
Favorite song's on your vintage stereo
record spins around and your needle's down
put your needle down

I found your true blues
lying in a garden near the grocery
and a permanent scar in your arm
where the nighttime bleeds
I'm dreaming of the days
the ones we took for free
do you remember girl?
do you remember girl?
do you remember girl?
Remember the girl?
A younger girl...
Track Name: Golden Lights
Yesterday the dailies came to you
Flowers on the table with bread
Golden lights, golden lights
Yesterday the dailies came to you

Ripped up on a Saturday evening
Dried up in a sermon's repair
Passing wine, passing wine
Another day's paid self-medication

How did all the years go by
We sang your song a thousand times
Every time i close my eyes
I wonder where we'll be in the morning
(there will be no other time in the light)

All the booze you lifted on
All the sizes you've worn
All the shame you've carried for so long
All the news you've written
All the lies you've buried
All the tears you've tasted for so long

Flowers on a passing by casket
Towers in a state of disrepair
Golden lights, golden lights
A glimmer that fades into your sunset

All the booze you lifted on
All the signs you've buried
All the years you've wasted for so long
Track Name: Big Dipper
When the whiskey dries up
will you feel much better?
will you get off the couch?
will you write a letter?
If the sen sen runs out
will you fuel a hell drive
on a two day bender
interstate 95
Susan's on the line
a bottle of red wine
grapes fall off the vine,
become discolored
habits all of mine
it happens all the time
when the liquor flows
there she goes
and hope you feel much better
I hope you feel much better
Paul McCartney singing humble pie
and fighting for his name in the dusty hall of fame
I hope he feels much better
I hope you feel much better
The clowns at passenger side
took your pride and sacked you
one day we'll drive in your car
windows down, sideways
Big Dipper in the sky
I crossed your path a thousand times
My muse has drifted off to sea
So I thought I'd borrow you.
Track Name: Simulations
Simulations cannot prepare
the young for winters of despair
Sunday school could be Saturday's felony
Salutations of blind respect
on the floor where you genuflect
Sunday's fools led Saturday's revelry
On quaint stone walls
the center of town
the future lights a cigarette
like the past you got there too fast
now you're checking for signs
bloodshot eyes, sudden mood swings
do you arbitrate or give a pass
with rose colored glasses on
aaaaaahhhhhhh
aaaaaahhhhhhh
a choo choo train, a rubber spoon
an off key tune
singing songs of praise
in a daze now you're
pampered and coddled
exhausted role models in rehab
mental abstinent, far from diligent
aah aa aa
aah aa aa
aah aa aa
aah aa aa
aah aa aa
aah aa aa
aah aa aa
Simulations cannot prepare
the young for winters of despair
sunday school could be Saturday's felony
Salutations of blind respect
on the floor where you genuflect
Sunday's fools led Saturday's revelry
Track Name: The Runway
Love is on the runway, flying to Miami
Hot June friday, the first of summer
from the window I can see your eyes aglow
This feeling won't go
And when I leave
could you forgive me
and try to find the love
we left behind
Oh connect my soul
Where's my home
Love is on the runway
Hiding in the city
The last of summertime
We left behind
But everything becomes remiss
I'm shaken by the kiss
I thought you should know
Please just go
Go on, bye bye bye bye bye
Track Name: Miracle
We're getting close to something we've longed for
Just so delighted, attracted to you
It took a rock to walk up this mountain
Thought I could taste the top of the peak
Yeah it's gonna take a miracle
for you to get sober again
I tried to find the lyrical
but something tells me it's just pretend
Never gonna see you again
Your watch says half nine
You're late for work again
You missed the red line
Home from central square
Something fleeting
Maybe it's a feeling
Write it on a napkin
Squirt it on a hot dog
You denied it, never tried it
Never gonna get yourself
Never gonna get there

The girls are in motion
Wearing white jeans
The passion is guilty
She's just seventeen

I was lost, no dough in my pockets
Strung out stranded, caught in between
Two roads low, and one I was hung on
You came along and rescued me

At night we grow weary
And they tell me that it's over again
I try to find the lyrical
But something tells me it's just pretend
And it's gonna take a miracle for you
gonna take a miracle for me
It's gonna take a miracle for you
Gonna take a miracle
Never gonna see you again
