about

This song is basically about growing up in a sheltered environment where there was much happiness, and there was also tragedy. Wonderful memories suddenly compromised by the realities of life and the notion that everything you aspired to be was a lie. It's a tiny glimpse of the Catholic psyche, perhaps through the backdrop of James Joyce. My father was an incredible man, loved his children, loved to party, worked very hard and was successful. His church was #1. After he died, I wondered why he was so bound to it. Right around this time, the Boston Archdiocese had its own sex abuse scandal, joining the ranks of parishes all over the world. I will forever envision my father kneeling down to pray every night, and thinking of it as his own way of meditation. I found it odd how so many things unraveled after my father's death.

lyrics

Yesterday the dailies came to you
Flowers on the table with bread
Golden lights, golden lights
Yesterday the dailies came to you

Ripped up on a Saturday evening
Dried up in a sermon's repair
Passing wine, passing wine
Another day's paid self-medication

How did all the years go by
We sang your song a thousand times
Every time i close my eyes
I wonder where we'll be in the morning
(there will be no other time in the light)

All the booze you lifted on
All the sizes you've worn
All the shame you've carried for so long
All the news you've written
All the lies you've buried
All the tears you've tasted for so long

Flowers on a passing by casket
Towers in a state of disrepair
Golden lights, golden lights
A glimmer that fades into your sunset

All the booze you lifted on
All the signs you've buried
All the years you've wasted for so long
